California did good, didn’t it? No on EVERYTHING! Take THAT, Arnold. I
was immensely cheered this morning, driving home, thinking about my
home state and how well it did, although by the skin of its teeth.
It does make me wonder, though, how a state’s population can reject gay
marriage initiatives, but still be liberal enough to understand that
some girls WILL have abortions, whether they’re safe or not. Oh, well.
On the gay civil rights front: Go Maine! Texas, you make me ashamed and
sad (although I know my loving liberal Texan readers got out there and
voted!).
There. The political section of this blog is now over, and we can talk
about sensitive things like feelings. And how I miss Lala and I think
she’s been well enough Buddhist for a while, am’nt I right? How much
levitating can someone do in a week? (Don’t freak out – I don’t think
she levitates. Rides a skateboard pretty well, though.) The dogs and I
are ready for her to come home now.
I just started my weekend, and I didn’t do it well. I got off at six,
home by seven, in bed by eight, and I meant to just nap a little. I got
up at three! That’s a Real Sleep, which means that tonight’s sleep will
be rough, and I have to get up at five in the morning to make it to
work for an all-day mandatory training class, which eats into valuable
weekend time. But god bless overtime.
I’ve deemed today my do-nothing day. I’ve already slept most of it
away, and you know what I’m going to do with the rest? Nothing.
(Nothing being knitting/spinning and watching Tivo, the best kind of
nothing.) If I sleep tonight, great. If I don’t, at least tomorrow is
only training and I can’t kill anyone while on the job.
I have this new Hotel Theory, which I’ll explain in the next post. But right now I have big nothing plans to put into place….

I had to delurk to pass on a little tidbit about the Texas marriage law that I found today.
Part of the new kegislation reads “This state or a political subdivision of this state may not create or recognize any legal status identical or similar to marriage.” By strict constructionist standards, this badly written clause nullifies all Texas marriages — marriage is, in fact, a legal status identical to marriage.
Anyroads, the judiciary is unlikely to read it that way, but it does offer some cold comfort, the thought of abolishing all marriage in the attempt at constructing a legal inequality. Bigotry truly does lead to lapses in logic.

those dogs look lonely! i cannot believe you didn’t have any emergency chocolate in your house. i ALWAYS have a few bars of green & blacks stashed, for medicinal purposes only…

Oh, the woggie bogs. Woof.
And my solution is for Texas to just SECEDE. Go away and take your band of thugs with you when you go.

I heard that today too, about the wording in Texas. What idiots. I hope it doesn’t hold up. And shame on those people who voted for it! I think Texas and Kansas should be given back to Mexico. If they’ll take them.
Kat says
Hah! Texas just voted to do away with all marriage. Can’t wit to see what happens to it in the courts.

I was cheering for you this morning when I heard the news on NPR.
And far be it for me to poke fun at anyone else’s typos, but I think CJ is on to the reason why the lawmakers in TX are screwy. They’re frickin’ DRUNK.

Hope your day of doing the best kind of nothing was a good one. La will be home before you know it. It does get easier, I promise.

All of my friends in TX voted against that initiative. They’re all pretty sad and pissed off today.
And unfortunately, the logic about the law nullifying all marriages in the state is not quite right, as much as we’d like to believe. They define marriage as a legal status between a man and a woman, and then the second part notes that the state can’t create or recognize a status identical or similar to marriage. That second part is a comparison…the first definition still stands, because you have to have something to compare it to. It’s like me trying to say that I’m my identical twin – can’t do it, because I am one entity, and I’m just myself. I’m not identical to myself, I *am* myself.
I still don’t have to like it, though.

I voted on that gd gay rights initiative a milllion times, including the special one they had in February of… 1998? 1999?… which none of my friends bothered to do and which started the whole ridiculous ball rolling for the unending “People’s Veto.” Now that we (finally) trounced them, the morons have announced that next they are going to tackle same-sex marriage. Let’s hope they’re met with the same response.
Being kind of bored with the whole thing (I swear I’ve voted for gay rights in like TEN elections), I was more interested to see what would become of the proposed constitutional amendment to allow fisherman to have a different property tax for their ocean front property, similar to what farms have. It passed! Which I think it great. All of these people from away came in and snapped up all the ocean front, and suddenly people who’s families had lived on the coast as far back as records can show couldn’t aford their family homes (which, in many cases, look like mere shacks next to the neighbors’). I’ll climb down off my soapbox now! Congrats, California!

Do nothing days are the best. I’m planning on having part of a do-nothing day, but definitely a relaxing day today. Hope Lala gets home soon. It’s hard to be without the one you love.

You said am’nt! My brother said that for years because he thought it was a real contraction. And he’s uber stubborn, so he wouldn’t listen to anyone who tried to correct him. ๐
I’m so jealous of your nothing day. I can’t wait for thanksgiving weekend for that very reason…

This liberal Texan voted! And like you, I am ashamed and sad . . . sometimes I really do wonder why I live here, even though it is home.

If Lala’s Buddhist retreat is anything like the ones I go to, I’m sure she’s far from levitating. Rubbing lots of Bengay on her knees perhaps, or learning how to walk quickly even though both her legs are asleep (and possibly also frostbitten), but not levitating. It’s worth it, though, I swear! Hope you enjoy your do-nothing day. ๐

I was very happy that my liberal brothers and sisters in counties other than Orange at least have some sense. My fellow voters in the OC voted YES on pretty much everything! Hhhhhhhh, as La says so eloquently…
Gwen says
I hadn’t caught the results yet for our CA propositions. I was sure they’d be yessed and yessed and I wasn’t feeling too happy about it. Now I feel much better!
What can I say? I get my news from knitblogs!
(yes, I voted)
(relurk)
