We lost this round.
Addressing Democrats, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay summed up the arguments on both sides at the start of the debate. “You think this bill is cruel and we think same-sex marriage is a contradiction in terms,” DeLay, R-Texas, said.
Yeah. It is cruel. I have to move to Canada.
*** Added later, on second thought. Screw that. While I still want to move to Canada someday, I will not be driven out of my country by people who think I deserve fewer rights than they do because they don’t fully understand love or its different manifestations. Let’s keep fighting, shall we? Togther.

As a married mother of two, I would be sad to see you move to Canada. Don’t let the yahoos win. We just need to get more women into political offices and the world will be a better place (I hope). (Love you blog.)

C’mmmmmooooon UP!! ๐

I say send Tom DeLay to Canada. Or somewhere; I guess I like Canada and wouldn’t abuse them like that. You stay here.

Well, I just happen to have a “friend” who wouldn’t mind a roommate in September…

You could also try switching to Mozilla Firefox for a browser. It doesn’t allow popups. You would still need to leave IE installed for the cases when you want that capability.
It’s easy to install and will import your bookmarks and cookies fom IE or Netscape.

While I would adore having you as a fellow Canadian, you’re right–stay and fight the good fight.
And don’t for a second be fooled that Canadians are all nice people like me–there are lots of people here who are saying nasty things about same-sex marriage. We just happen to have a charter of rights and liberal/sane Supreme court judges.
Our new legal problem is same-sex divorce–seems the divorce act hasn’t been changed to recognize gay marriage and it’s desolution.
Em says
Yes, let’s keep fighting. In Brooklyn, where you so clearly belong.
All I can hope for is that, just like what happened 12 years ago, the measures Republicans are passing are going to piss enough people off to vote every single one of ’em out of office.
indigirl says
Hey, we don’t want him up here!!!! But we do want you! Come north… it’s great!
Christy says
It was not a good day for us, huh. I don’t know what else to say.
Melissa says
Idiots. (Tom Lay and his supporters – noone here!)
However, its better to stay and fight in this situation, I think. It may not get accepted now, but gay marriage will be almost a no-brainer for the next generation to accept. But, it should be a no-brainer now…
J Strizzy says
ok, so it seems like a loss, but I’m not sure it’s going to stick. the Senate would have to pass it too, and of course there will be legal challenges — and I don’t think the Supreme Court is going to just let Congress take away its responsibility/power so easily.
Chandra says
Man oh man does that piss me off!!! Isn’t it lovely that Tom DeLay was able to make time in his busy schedule–between gerrymandering Texas and smearing Sandy Berger–to ram through this bigoted and flatly unconstitutional bit of Americana??? (Sorry for the extra punctuation, but I can’t help myself.)
We’ve been hearing for days that the Congress doesn’t have time to do anything about implementing recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, but they have time for THAT? I’m so angry and ashamed.
I’ll stay and fight with you, though. This is OUR country and OUR Constitution, and I’ll be damned if I let them wreck it.

Hi, found your blog thru Carrieoke. It’s great! You know, we are having a hell of a fight this November in Georgia about gay marraige. They are trying to put a ban on gay marraige in our state constitution. It’s going to be on the ballot this November. We need 1.3 million votes to defeat the ban. Wish us luck, or tell Canada to prepare for a mass influx of Georgians ๐

We would love to have you up here…BUT not Mr. DeLay puhlease. Hang in there until the election and maybe things will get better after that!!?? Let’s all hope so. I would echo what Alison has said that not all Canadians are as tolerant as we would like, but we are a more liberal country than the states is historically speaking. Hang in there and keep on fighting for humanity. Bill Maher said it best last night on Larry King that alot of the problems in the world are to do with religion…and especially good old Mr. Bush’s administration. Keep religion out of politics!
Sign me your friend and a Christian in Canada!

*sigh* Well, at least we won the first round. It makes my stomach hurt to think about all the misconceptions backed by prejudice and hatred that fuel this stupid stupid movement. Gay marriage opponents make me sad. And angry.
One day, it will all be different. And it will be because we stayed. and fought. And VOTED!

as a resident of Laramie, WY, I’d like to spit on the WY representatives in Congress. We’ve had the discussion on prejudice and hate and all that. It turns my stomach that they’ve all jumped on this bandwagon. they of all congressional representatives should be ashamed of their sponsorship of hate.
even though I’ve considered moving to Canada, we all need to stay and VOTE. we can’t let these people have our country and pervert our government into the giant gorilla that sits on the world and its own people. maybe we need the Canadians to move here . . .

Just found your blog through Knitty Kitty. I think tremendous social change for gay/lesbian issues is already happening here in the US…in spite of extremist right-wing conservatives. I’ll date myself (!) by quoting an old favorite…The times they are a-changing. Stick around sez me, another contradancing knitter.

Yes, let’s keep fighting. I’ve had quite the time with inner conflict, having fled north coincidentally mid-GWB. At first, I felt so lucky to have serendipitously escaped to the true north strong and free. But now, although I’ll vote – don’t get me wrong – I feel like the US could use more loud-mouthed lefties like me. Eventually, I’ll strike a balance – read: I’ll feel balanced. Regardless, come visit! Vancouver’s even more lefty than San Francisco!
