I’ve had the oddest tired/energized feelings today. I woke early and picked up Marama by 0715, and we went for our first real training run (which went great, by the way, running alongside the Great Highway, next to the ocean, my new favorite place to run. Okay, I only have two places I’ve EVER run. But it’s my favorite of the two).
Then I came home after a good lunch out (I’ll be the only marathoner to gain weight while training), and SAT on the couch. Stared. Thought about nothing. Just was. Felt a mite guilty about it, then I got over the guilt, turned over, and took a wee rest. It wasn’t a nap, because I’m no good at napping, but I’m getting better at just resting. With the sliding screen door open to the backyard, and a cat pressed up against my side, a wee rest doesn’t get any better.
But I couldn’t get up. And couldn’t get up. And couldn’t get up. I even called a friend and desperately asked her to come over, so I would Get Up. But she had plans that were a bit more fun, I suppose, than watching a girl sink so far into the couch that she comes up with double-point needles she forgot she had. Huh.
Then I got up and cleaned the entire house. How DOES a house get that dirty in just a few weeks? I don’t even wear shoes in the house and the cats don’t go outside. But the dust bunnies in the corners! And the grime on the windowsills! Incredible.
Now I’m tired again. But I just noticed the new season of Six Feet Under has started, and has been captured by my best friend Ovit (TiVo backwards), so I gotta go. I’d make dinner if I wasn’t so lethargic…. Maybe it’s a mac’n’cheese night. Or we can skip right to ice cream if you’d like. Okay. Let’s.

How did you like the season premiere? I do believe I like Six Feet Under even better than The Sopranos!

So, are you in Gryffindor? 😉
I’ve had the slugs too.

Yesterday I watched my kids running through the 87 degree heat at Rancho San Antonio and wondered where they get the energy. I feel it in short bursts, or inspired by circumstance here and there, but the urge to just sit and knit and be is overwhelmingly strong.

Good luck with your training, Rachael! A word of advice on shin splints: try not to kick your heels up much when you run. My former boss was a marathon runner, and he told me that a long, long time ago. Hope the new shoes help, too!

Ok, now I’m sure you’re way ahead of em with the running. I still can’t even do 3 miles, so this idea of us running the 5k “together” in August is getting a bit out of my grasp. I suppose at least we can leave the starting line together.
And if you ever find yourself in need of someone to drag you up out of the couch again, doing so would probably help drag me up out of my own couch too.

Good luck with your training! If you like running near the ocean, you’ll LOVE running barefoot on the beach right where the surf hits. It’s quite possibly my favorite thing ever.

I often feel tired like that! You had a pretty big day, though, so it’s okay. Your couch isn’t possessed or anything, is it?

How does one go from sitting and staring into space, to cleaning ones entire house? Really, dear, there are several steps you could have taken in between, most involving the word “knitting”! That kind of energy shouldn’t be wasted on house cleaning. Besides, those dust bunnies worked so *hard* to get in, does it seem fair to make them leave?
Maybe they cook, or something useful like that.

If you gain weight doing marathon training, you sure won’t be the only one. I did. I got this feeling like I deserved to rest and eat like never before, because I was in training. I got STRONG, and I’m short, I was basically a fireplug. 🙂

the thing i miss the most from marathoning was sunday naps after training runs. nothing like it!

Sounds like a fabulous run but I like the idea of the beach and surf barefoot even better! I didn’t know that about kicking the heels up. I have horrible shin splints and can’t run. I was a major butt self-kicker when I ran. Now I know the problem.
