because you know I usually don’t, but please.
Mike Huckabee would like to change the Constitution to reflect God’s standards. That’s great. And now he’s comparing homosexuality to bestiality. Fantastic.
From an interview in Beliefnet:
BN: Is it your goal to bring the Constitution into strict
conformity with the Bible? Some people would consider that a kind of
dangerous undertaking, particularly given the variety of biblical
interpretations.Huckabee: Well, I don’t think that’s a radical
view to say we’re going to affirm marriage. I think the radical view is
to say that we’re going to change the definition of marriage so that it
can mean two men, two women, a man and three women, a man and a child,
a man and animal. Again, once we change the definition, the door is
open to change it again. I think the radical position is to make a
change in what’s been historic.
Wow. Ever heard of Rick Santorum, Mike? What will the word Huckabee come to mean? Any good ideas, Dan Savage?
*Edited to add: It’s started! Thanks, Dan. (Warning, links might be offensive to some. That’s the point.)
Claudia says
What an f********* idiot, pardon my french? What the hell is wrong with people??! I can’t even believe that people like him have air time! :-s
Carrie says
He is one scary motherf-er. Ahem.
Carry says
Scary doesn’t even begin to describe…
And Dan’s already on it: http://slog.thestranger.com/2008/01/savage_love_letter_of_the_day_20

I can’t help it, I have to write something all tart and sarcasmo but I also don’t want to throw gasoline on your fire. So know I’m prefacing it with the fact I AGREE with you. I just read these things and take them to their most absurd extreme. Yes. Because marriage between two men or two women is the same as Oscar marrying his goat, Ella. In a ceremony presided over by a Klan member. In attendance were Oscar’s family, who couldn’t be happier he’s finally settling down, and Ella’s “posse” which included some chickens, a rooster, four dogs and a disgruntled goat named Edmund who believed at one time he would have Ella’s …hoof.. in matrimony. After a brief honeymoon in Tahiti, Oscar & Ella plan to reside in their farm home outside of Springfield.
What scares these people so much? I don’t get it. It’s a fine line between brainwashing and devotion.
Carry says
Maybe if I “html it”?
Dan’s on it
pam says
This man frightens me. Whatever happened to the separation of church and state? Religious freedom? Sanity?
Also, he looks like a big goofball in every picture I’ve seen of him smiling and really, do we need anymore goofiness representing the USA? (I jest, but only a little.) ;>
Jennie says
Geez, what a freak.
With people like that, I always wonder: does your wife leave the house for 7 days when she has your period? Do you never wear cotton blends or wool blends? No shellfish for you?
Hypocrites.
Jody says
Comments like his make me very sad for our “enlightened” society.
Gwen says
*shudder*
cordeliaknits says
You know, I’m actually beginning to think we should allow people to marry their dogs–after all, pet health insurance has got to be a lot cheaper than people health insurance, right?
If we do, then maybe it’ll make same-sex marriage seem boring and normal in comparison, and the hate-mongers will direct their fear and repressed sexuality somewhere else.
Celia says
I do not get it. I know I live in the Berkeley Bubble, but I just do not get the Conservative Christian Right. They are NOT very Christian.
Dr. Steph says
I’m liking the reference to Huckabees being closeted gays. And really, I’m so f-ing sick of people like this. Stay the hell out of people’s lives!
mai says
mike huckabee is a fucktard. really.
jeanne says
He looks like a big goofball, Pam, so people who AREN’T right-wing freaks like he is will just dismiss him, believing that he’s such an idiot that no thinking person could possibly take him seriously. Just ignore him, and he’ll go away, kinda like Dan Quayle did. WRONG – ignore him, and he’ll be in the White House and up our reproductive systems before we know what hit us.
Katrina says
OMG, I can’t imagine a president named Huckabee but I had no idea. I just don’t get it. Love and tolerance, the tenets of christian charity, not so much in evidence. The real scary part is the number of people who agree. For every 1 of me there are 4-5 ‘phobes’ of all kinds.
I feel sick, didn’t plan to vote for him, voting my gender this time around but now I am going to check her stats and make sure where she stands.

Lara says
Just in case The Huck is elected, my sister and some of her friends put together the below website:

Thought you might like to take a look…
Sara says
I know Huckabee is freaky, but, everyone, calm down. Huckabee, or anyone else, has about a snowball’s chance in Hell of Christianizing the Constitution, and he knows it. He’s just yakking up a line that he knows certain elements will go for. He’s probably also wanting a rise out of everyone else. The blessed US of A is a multicultural, religiously diverse place, where even the Christians may not want a quasi-theocratic state. The nasty H is just working an angle. Controvery probably helps him. If he disturbs you, just work against him.
I’ve actually been thinking about how one might go about defusing a sh**disturber like H. Any ideas? Great *dog*, these rabble-rousing rightist candidates remind me of kids on the schoolgrounds who yell racial slurs just to cause a fuss that will let them be something, if only a problem.
jeanne says
Sara: Ever read Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale? The U.S. government is overtaken by the extreme religious right, and every woman’s civil liberties get flushed. It’s the scariest book I ever read, precisely because it could happen.
Raina says
I am not certain where you are located, sounds like the U.S. Very weird and scary. Here in Canada people of either gender can marry a person of any gender. I can’t even imagine a politician here saying crapola like that; not even here in redneck Alberta. Good grief, are there no hate laws to stop people like that. Very very sad.
Liz Cadorette says
Mr. Huckabee,
You’ll find, should you attempt to alter the Constitution, that the authors were way ahead of you and those who think like you.
Please re-read the First Amendment, it has some key points you appear to be missing, and if you’re planning on getting elected, you’ll have to swear to uphold the following, among others:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
Those first ten words are especially applicable. Get a clue.
No Love,
Liz
Caroline Crayon says
Please, never apologize for being “political.” Who can refrain from having searing headaches in the Ethics and Civics part of the brain these days? Thanks for pulling up this sludge to the light of day.
PS: Mike Huckabee hates our freedom.
Sil says
I was in Atlanta today sitting waiting for my plane and saw that interview where he’s talking about amending the constitution to reflect his beliefs, and HAD to get up and walk off the anger. Then I bought candy and was better, but still pissed. Get all political – it’s your damn blog!
Angelique says
what a scary country it would be if he got elected.
Rabbitch says
Come to Canada.
We chocolate.
(and yes, I’m horrified, but I couldn’t think of what to say about how horrified I was without going on for hours and hours and oh look, there I go …)
Rabbitch says
That said we HAVE chocolate, I know it did, but apparently I’m drunk. At work. Again.
toni in fla says
It’s enough to make you puke, isn’t it? And you don’t have to apologize to us for using your blog to express your politics. Few will be surprised at your position, if they’ve read more than one or two entries, and most of your regular readers will heartily agree, including moi.
Good thing we women folk still have the vote, isn’t it? Especially we LIBERAL women folk.
Kerstin says
Salon had a recent article on Huckabee detailing his ties to proponents of Reconstructionist and Dominionist theology. These folks are dead serious and they realize it may take another 40 years for their ideas to take hold. So they just keep on trying. I find it ominous that one could make it so far as to be a candidate for President. One blogger I read noted that Goldwater was considered extreme back in ’64, now his ideas are mainstream.
My 12 year old has his finger on the pulse of this nation. Back in October, he had to create a civilization for a school project. He came up with “Chuck Norris Nation.” He received an A+. Imagine my shock when I started seeing Chuck on the arm of Huck. Leave it to my kid to see into the future. 😉
Debbie says
That is truly frightening to me. I hate it when people try to force their values down my throat and to have a politician trying to do it by wanting to change the constitution is just plain wrong.
Ginnie says
I believe he has very little chance of winning. But, Georgie did, so clearly, I am full of crap. But, it continues to amaze me that this whole group of people cannot see that that is just plain wrong. I believe the whole religious right is turning, somewhat, but they do still weild a great deal of power.
I also think the key is to be very vocal about making sure every woman you know votes. If all of us voted, we would decide the direction of this country, I am convinced.
Be political all over the place, Rachael, it is important to the whole country for all of us to be political.
As for the whole get Huckabeed discussion, I will only say it really should be something very gross and distasteful.
Steph F. says
I have just one word for that man and his ideas: STABBY. ughh. What DID happen to separation of church and state..?
Juti says
Go all political. Please. We need more people like you speaking out and in the streets.
I used to think that GW couldn’t hurt this country, that the Constitution was too strong for one idiot to do any real lasting damage. Silly me.
maryse says
i am not going to dismiss him as some harmless wackjob since we’ve learned in the past 8 years what one fucktard can do, but even the christian conservatives aren’t coming out in droves for him (see south carolina primary results).
but i think we should keep an eye and people like him. let them know we’re on to them.
