This is actually how Willie lies around sometimes. He likes his limbs to dangle.
And here is me. Surgery went well, after waiting until SEVEN THIRTY PEE EM. Dude, I was completely over feeling hungry/thristy by then, I tell you what. But they were soooo nice to me, and my anesthetician and I discussed martinis, and then he gave a GREAT one in my veins, a nice, relatively slow-acting one (none of that 10-9-OUT stuff), so much so that I remember telling the crowded room how much I loved karaoke, and would they like a little Crazy, Patsy-Cline-style? Oh yes? You would? I belted out three lines, started on the fourth to the sounds of "Nice!" and hysterical laughter and then I was out, and then suddenly in recovery where my nurse was so sweet I wanted to kiss her. I had my very own nurse, not shared with anyone — everyone in recovery did. That’s luxury, I must say. Kaiser’s doing me right.
Came home and tried to sleep, but at 4:45am I decided to go back into ER — couldn’t sleep because my breathing was so obstructed by swelling that every time I fell asleep, I would choke myself awake, and the advice nurse said I should be seen. They gave me some steriods (yech) to help with the swelling, and I was home again by 10am.
The pain is bad. Nothing to do about that. The meds are adequate for 2 of the 4 hours, and then the next 2, while I’m waiting for the next dose, are no fun at all.
There. That is your update. I will try to stay offline and just let the pictures do the talking, but you all are right THERE and I can talk to you, and it doesn’t hurt at all to type…..
jodi says
Awww.
I hope you are as comfortable as kitty there…with better meds. =)
Hooray, no more tonsils!!
Muah.
carol says
Sorry you are feelin’ funky…..Let the critters take care of you….looking forward to you back in the blog!
jeanne says
I hope you’re feeling better, and that now your tonsils will have the good manners not to grow back a third time!
My June looks just like Willie when she climbs up on my hip to sleep. She parks her butt in the dip in my waist and sleeps “uphill”, with dangling legs and gentle snores!
Carrie says
After my surgery a few years ago, they have me half doses of my morphine every three hours instead of full doses every six. That way when they wore off, I didn’t have to wait as long before I could have a little more. Maybe that would help you?
lyssa says
The thought of you singing Crazy to the operating room staff cracks me up. I wish I had had that much fun with anaesthesia.
I hope you’re feeling better soon! Don’t stay away too long.
Anne says
So sorry. Choking yourself awake is no good. Heal fast!
Can you take anything like Tylenol PM? So that when the good drugs wear off you can at least be asleep?
auntiemichal says
Willie’s a monorail cat! See http://icanhascheezburger.com/tag/monorail/
Can Digit loan you a pain patch? LOL
whosadele says
Willie is so cute, I had to say “Awwwwww” out loud (at work). Then I had to laugh out loud at the thought of you belting out Patsy Cline to the surgery team! hahahahaha, I wish I could pull that off! ๐
Feel better soon.
jen c says
oh dear, that sounds TERRIBLE. but willie is cute and i’m sure you’re cute too! hope you feel better soon.
Beth says
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww… I feel like that right now too. I’m glad you are home, although I’m sorry you had to pit stop back in the ER. Let’s hope that you are feeling better soon and that this is your LAST tonsil surgery!!!
Erin says
Don’t let this get around, but your cats may be as cute as mine! Hope you’re feeling better soon. I’ll go eat that ice cream for you, ‘kay?
(PS – my husband says hi to Digit, he has a special soft spot for grey tabbies with more than the usual number of toes)
Nicki says
Heal quickly! At least you’re not in an e-collar while sporting a shaved rear end. Remember, it could always be worse. When I came to in the recovery room last year, my surgeon came into the room snickering and grinning like the cheshire cat. When I asked him what was up he just said, “you are just too darn funny.” To this day, I have no idea what I did or said, and I am mortified by the possibilities. At least you know you were being a ham!
Chloe says
Okay, I know you can’t go here anytime soon but I had dinner in Cholame and you and LaLa HAVE TO GO.
They have pie. Lots of pie. Great food. Great iced tea. Great shakes. 9Okay, I’ve only bee going there for 55 years, but today it was just sublime.)
Hope your throat feels better soon and you get totally all de-tonsilized for life.
Romi says
Feel better soon!
Rabbitch says
Dude, I’m thinking of you. And also too available in the middle of the night via email ’cause I’m working nine in a row, so drop me a line if you need to chat.

I love Willie!! (And Digit, too, of course!) Take care of yourself, lady. Jell-O, perhaps?
Steph F. says
ack! *wishes you a speedy recovery
Holly of HollYarns says
Hang in there! I had my tonsils out when I was 22 and luckily they managed to get them ALL OUT! I feel for you! I didn’t do much ice cream during recovery, but managed to make myself really sick of vanilla pudding.

You brave, lady. Lots of love to you, and may the ice cream at least taste good, even if it doesn’t help the pain much…
Michelle says
I love, LOVE that you sang a few lines of Crazy before going under. That’s my Rach. I hope you feel better soon–I know that picture of Willie makes *me* feel better…
Felicia says
I had my tonsils taken out when I was about six – and I can STILL remember how awful it was. So I only have sympathy for you now. Hope they don’t have the nerve to grow back again.
Gwen says
Stupid pain. Stupid pain medication. I don’t believe in drug-free or under-drugged post-op.
Slow that medication metabolism down! Sloooooooowwwwwww….
Healing thoughts to you.
Carol says
Here’s hoping you feel better soon. And that shot of Wilie is just asking for a lolcat subtitle. Hmmm, “Halp I’ve fallen and I cantz get up!”
Ilona says
I hope you feel better soon. I had gallbladder surgery on June 5 but I wasn’t the songtress you were (c: Cheers
Krista says
So not fun. I had my tonsils out at 20 or 21, and it was the most pain I’ve ever felt (And, I’ve given birth to three children – twice with no drugs for pain). I was in such pain I was vomiting from it, and I don’t recall them actually giving me anything for it.
I made a funny discovery one day, though…
The juice from a jar of olives was very soothing.
Oh, and tapioca pudding slides down nicely.
Other than that, I nibbled on saltines and washed mouse size bites down with ice cold water. As I recall, the only way I could sleep was sitting half up with my head on the arm of the couch (there were probably some pillows involved, too).
Lost 10 lbs in a week, too, which, as I’ve heard, is not recommended.
Hope you find something that soothes.
Julie says
I’m thinking of you, Rachael, and hope the meds work longer each dose. DH went through it several years ago, so I really do know about the pain. He was drinking codeine by the gallon. I don’t think he pooped for a month. (I know, TMI, but I hope that made you laugh a little.)
Sydney says
I hope you have a speedy recovery and your tonsils don’t grow back this time. Take care!
Chris says
Ouch!! I’m hoping things are much better – I’m catching up in order. That is a wonderful kitty picture…
Jennie says
That choking sounds scaaaary. Glad things are under control. I have some codeine syrup if you run out. Because reading about you calling Lala in just to tell her how much you love her… priceless.
Jennie says
And btw, now I have “Crazy” stuck in my head. Fortunately, I love that song.
